25th & 26th September 2010

Does your back ache after massaging? or maybe your neck and shoulders - or hands and wrists? If you have answered yes to any of these questions then you need to change the way you work or your career will be short-lived. Why hurt yourself whilst trying to help others?

This is the brand new course to accompany Darien Pritchard’s latest book ’Dynamic Bodyuse for Effective Strain-Free Massage’ - the widely acclaimed career maintenance reference book.

A copy of the book is included in the course price (let us know if you already have a copy and the course fee will be reduced by £18.00)

Too many massage practitioners are forced into early retirement due to the accumulated strains of their work, particularly if they regularly apply firm pressure. The most common problems are thumb and wrist strains, chronically tight shoulders and back strain/aches. This workshop addresses these problems by focusing on how you use your hands and your body in massage sessions. It looks at ways of conserving your hands, particularly your vulnerable thumbs, fingers and wrists. It will alert you to the common causes of straining the hands in massage, and offers effective alternatives to reduce these strains. It also focuses on using your body in a dynamic, effective way to support the work of your hands - by using natural body strength in a way that is neither hard nor rigid, so that you can work with ease while still applying firm pressure. It covers generating power from your lower body, transferring this force through your trunk to your arms, and moving around the table to align your body behind your hands.

The workshop offers clear information and practical instruction. It includes guidelines for working to suit your build and for developing self-monitoring so that you can adjust your bodyuse as you work. This dynamic approach is designed to help you to sustain your career by reducing the strains on your body, while helping you to be more effective. It also benefits the recipient – the massage is experienced as less ‘attacking’, and thus easier to respond to. (Note: This workshop complements the ‘Hands Free’ Massage’ workshop, which covers using your forearm and elbow to save your hands.)

Darien Pritchard has been a bodyworker for over thirty years, including twenty five of training massage professionals and twenty of teaching CPD workshops for qualified practitioners. Following his own need to look after his back, Darien has always incorporated good bodyuse as an essential element of his massage practice and teaching. He was very influenced by Tai Chi, ‘free dance’ and training in the Feldenkrais Method® of movement awareness. Darien has been a pioneer in focusing on the practitioner’s bodyuse as an integral part of massage training in the UK. He also been a pioneer of ‘Hands Free’ Massage (the skillful, sensitive use of the forearms and elbows to save the practitioner’s hands) by adapting techniques from other traditions. He began teaching good bodyuse practice as a separate workshop for massage practitioners twenty years ago, and wrote the career-maintenance reference book Dynamic Bodyuse for Effective, Strain-free Massage (2007), which is the handbook for this course.

See much more when you look at your clients

Why in some people do spots/pimples keep reoccuring on the chin?

What does the puffiness under the eyes signify?

Does the shape of the eyebrows mean anything?

What can be told by the colour and size of your mouth?

 Face Diagnosis

This is Oriental Face & Body Diagnosis, the art of seeing beneath the superficial to the profound - of revealing the inner truth. It is about health, but also about the inner nature of the body, revealing, seeing and understanding the physical characteristics of the body. The body is likened to a book - once you begin to read and understand its pages it gives you a greater insight into dealing with peoples health. Body and Face Diagnosis is a tool to be used in conjunction with the consultation of the client, but gives you the insight to know the strengths and weaknesses that are being projected.

This course taught by Darien Pritchard is designed to help massage practitioners to save their fingers, thumbs and/or wrists (the most common areas of strain for practitioners) while applying firm pressure - You will learn new effective skills that can be integrated into your massage sessions.

Hands Free Massage with Darien Pritchard

This Hands Free Massage workshop covers a range of forearm techniques and introduces some elbow techniques that can substitute for and extend ‘classic’ massage techniques. Unfortunately, these powerful tools have a poor reputation with some people because of their insensitive use, so the course focuses on learning to feel with them as part of learning to use them carefully and skilfully so as to avoid brutalising the client. It also covers:

•    How and where to best use them;
•    How to moderate the pressure applied;
•    How to support this with good bodyuse rather than working too hard with your arms and shoulders;
•    How to blend these techniques smoothly into massage sessions.

The aim is to expand your repertoire and freshen your approach, to help you be more effective when applying pressure while saving your hands, thereby helping you to maintain your career.

Darien has been using his forearms and elbows for over two decades (without which he would have been unable to sustain his career). He was particularly inspired by receiving deep tissue and Hawaiian massage treatments, and adapted these massage ‘tools’ to deliver ‘Swedish Massage-style’ and deep tissue massage techniques. He began calling it Hands-Free Massage when he started teaching it as a separate course over a decade ago.

In addition to the course booklet all students will receive a DVD covering the techniques taught by Darien

Neuro Linguistic Programming is about how people “tick”– how we experience the world; how we process, store and retrieve information; our strategies for planning/making decisions and very important, how we relate to others. Our beliefs and values are developed from our experiences and our behaviours are the result.

      We will help you explore some basics involving awareness of interactive processes taking place in your everyday life, in language, non-verbal communication and vocal features, leading to why you find some acquaintances easy to get on with and others less so. Rapport building skills and how to change some irritating habits (only yours we’re afraid!) will be covered.

You will learn the value of flexibility in behaviours and an awareness of the ways in which you can interact positively with everyone you meet. You will practise some beneficial skills and understand a little more about your family, friends and acquaintances and of course clients/patients.

       After this course you will see how the processes work and will feel able to practise them with friends. That sounds good doesn’t it?  Also suitable for non therapists

Tension and discomfort in the shoulders is extremely common and this accredited, advanced massage level 3 course equips you with skills to be a far more effective massage therapist.
To attend you must hold a recognised massage qualification - if you’re unsure just give us a call and we’ll be happy to clarify

This workshop is designed to enhance the massage practitioner’s repertoire of techniques and effectiveness when working extensively on a client’s shoulders - a very common area of stiffness and soreness.
It covers specific deep massage, vibration and pressure techniques for release and re-energising of the muscles. These are allied with passive movements and dynamic stretches to promote greater ease and flexibility.

The workshop covers the choice of appropriate techniques for each client, ways of moderating the pressure, how to blend them smoothly into a massage session, and relevant exercises to offer the client for self maintenance.
There is an emphasis on good body use for the practitioner (including ways of saving your hands), and ’listening’ with your hands (monitoring and adapting to the client’s responses).

Many of you will have heard of Trigger Points (TP) but what are they and how do they work?  How can they be used in the treatment of myofascial pain? Can they be incorporated within other treatments, and importantly, what benefits do they have?

There has been much written about these mysterious little points, from the highly clinical Travel & Simons (T&S) to a wide range of complementary approaches. The methods of treating them also vary; T&S inject with local anaesthetic, others use force or rubber tipped sticks or movement. All these approaches seem to insist on fixed patterns and a defined response for any TP.

In my experience this fixed pattern is just the tip of the iceberg and invites further exploration. The more I work with students and clients the more I find so much more to learn.

Within Spineworks we have developed a special way of working with TPs which uses the clients’ own subconscious to re-establish the brain-nerve-muscle connections. It is this we will be exploring in this hands-on workshop. You will learn how you can help your clients and yourself. You will experience, both as giver and receiver, how the Spineworks technique releases holding tissue and opens the healing process. You will discover the mystery!

Ian trained in Shiatsu with KI Kai School in London, qualifying in 1993. In 1992 he started training in Reiki, specifically Usui Shisi Ryoho and after 10 years of practice he was initiated as a Reiki Master. In 1994 he met Tarpan Williams who had developed Spineworks during the previous 20 years. Ian trained with Tarpan and then worked as his apprentice. Together they developed the training courses. Tarpan returned to his native Australia in 1999. From that time Ian has been the only teacher in Europe, running courses throughout the UK and in Ireland and Greece.
He has developed the system further and completely redesigned the training programme. To honour these changes he has now relinquished the Spineworks name and coined the new name of Sensoma.

20th July 2008

This workshop is open to qualified massage therapists.
Many therapists work with back massage. Many clients request a back massage. And it can give great relief to tired and stressed people. But do you realise the effect that tight muscles on the front can have on the back?
In this seminar we will explore how working the front can release tissue on the back. You will learn techniques to release the ribs, the diaphragm and the psoas - and much more.
Turn your clients over and see the difference!
